About Us

More Than a School — We're Your Neighbors

American Language Services has been a part of Berkeley's community for over two decades. We started with a simple belief: everyone deserves the chance to communicate confidently, no matter where they come from or what language they speak at home.

Our instructors are patient, experienced, and genuinely invested in your progress. We don't believe in one-size-fits-all — every student gets a plan that matches their life, their schedule, and their goals. That's why people keep coming back, and why they bring their friends.

Why Choose Us

What Makes Us Different

We've built something special here — a place where learning feels human, progress is real, and nobody gets left behind.

Small Groups

Every class stays small so you actually get to speak, ask questions, and get feedback that matters.

Flexible Hours

Mornings, evenings, weekends — we schedule around your life, not the other way around.

Experienced Teachers

Our instructors have decades of combined experience and a real passion for helping people grow.

Multilingual Support

We speak the languages our students speak — so you're never stuck trying to explain yourself in a language you're still learning.

Student Stories

Hear From Our Community

Real words from real students who took a chance and found something great.

"I was nervous about starting an English class at my age, but the teachers here made me feel welcome from day one. Six months later, I'm having conversations I never thought possible."

"I failed my driving test once and lost confidence. The instructors at ALS helped me practice the right way, and I passed on my second try. They truly care about their students."

"My son needed help with English before starting a California school. The private tutoring sessions were exactly what he needed — patient, structured, and fun. He made incredible progress."
